The Best Activewear Shorts and Pants, According to the Moms Who Actually Wear Them

Skip the guesswork. FIT4MOM DC instructors and clients share the activewear pants and shorts that actually hold up to workouts.

Welcome to the weird weather time of the year in DC, when it should be chilly (it is October), but the weather also hits 85 degrees. While that can be frustrating on its own, it can also make getting dressed for your FIT4MOM DC class a little more confusing. Do you wear leggings or shorts? And which ones in each category are the best?

Similar to my post on sports bras, I knew that just a generic listicle wasn't going to cut it. Instead, the best person to answer the question was you. And by you, I actually mean you, our FIT4MOM DC instructors and moms! I polled our instructors and moms to ask them what their favorite shorts, leggings, and skorts are, and if they have any suggestions for maternity as well.

What to Look for Before You Buy

Before we full jumped into recommendations, let's do a quick overview of what to look for when you go to buy leggings or shorts. Even if you're buying based on a recommendation, it's always good to go through these questions so you make make sure that it's the perfect pair for you.

  • Squat Test

Or as I like to call it, "the turn around in front of a mirror and stick out your behind" test. But for reading sake, we'll stick to squat test. In my opinion, this is one of the most important tests. Why? It essentially answer the question of whether or not your underwear can be seen when you bend over or squat. You don't want your underwear visible through the fabric of your leggings or peeking out from underneath your shorts.

  • Waistband Height

There isn't a right answer for this one, it's all about what makes you comfortable. It can also change based on the fit of the piece. Personally, I LOVE a high rise waistband on my leggings and biker shorts, but I prefer a medium rise on looser shorts or sweatpants. It's all about what works for you.

I do have one pro-tip though: If you're pregnant and hate the feeling of fabric on your stomach, you want to pick a low to medium rise shorts or sweatpants. You don't want low rise leggings or biker shorts, because there's a very high chance that the fabric will roll down in the back.

  • Fabric Weight

Do you want a thinner, light weight material? Or a fabric that's a little heavier weight? If you're in person, this is really easy to figure out, you can just feel the material. But if you're shopping online, it's unfortunately a little more difficult. Many leggings are made out of similar material (spandex and polyester), you'll have to either go by the comments and recommendations or order them to find out.

  • Pockets (And Pocket Depth)

To pocket or to not pocket, that is the question, and only you have the answer for you. For me, I need a pocket and it needs to be deep enough to fit my phone. If you want a pocket, but you aren't sure about the depth, think about what you'll be putting in it. If you're just throwing in your keys and ID, then a small pocket on the side (or in the back of the pants) will work. If you're putting a phone in there, you need something a little deeper.

How do you figure out how deep the pockets are? Well, if you're shopping online, that can be tricky. It won't show up for most loose pants, but for fitted leggings or shorts, it's always super easy. Look at the pair in a bright color and then find the side view. The seam of the pocket is always going to show on the legging and that let's you see how deep the pocket is. I highlighted it in the picture below for you to see.

The One Recommendation that Clients Kept Giving

Instead of repeating it a hundred times in the next few paragraphs, I'm just going to tell you now that the #1 response I got was the Lululemon Align Leggings. They're comfortable and durable. The only downside is that the price point can be fairly high for for pair of leggings. If that's not in your budget, you can search for pairs on resale sites like Poshmark or Ebay. But, I also have it on very good authority that these leggings and these leggings have very similar qualities to the Lululemon leggings, but at a much lower price point. Now, I can not personally speak to how they compare to Lululemon, but I have tried out this brand before and I was a fan.

The Client and Instructor Picks: Leggings

I did get plenty of other suggestions, so let's dive in!

  • Lululemon Wunder train w/ pockets: Instructor and Run Coach Sarah said that these are her favorite for running! "I actually like this material more than their “running leggings” keeps everything in place and more comfortable. And great pockets for phone!"
  • Lululemon Swift Speed Leggings: Instructor (and running enthusiast) Ali agreed with the Lululemon Align recommendation, EXCEPT when it comes to running. For running, she turns to the Swift Speed Leggings.
  • Old Navy High Waist Pants Line (7/8 length legging, full length legging, or biker shorts): Both client Dominkia AND Instructor Dana (that's me!) recommended these! We both agreed that the quality is amazing and the price can't be beat.

The Client and Instructor Picks: Shorts

  • Outdoor voices light speed short: Sarah's top pick for running shorts. She said they're "really comfortable for running and then walking around/errands after. [They also have a] great phone pocket."
  • on cloud performance tights shorts: Sarah recommends these if you’re training or doing a long run. I also have to include her comment about them: "these have amazinggg pocket space and provide great coverage." (The three g's tell you everything you need to know.)
  • Yvette High Waisted Biker Shorts with Pockets: One of our clients said that they love these because "these are just the right amount of stretch, high-wasted enough to cover the parts I am self conscious about, and they stay in place and don’t ride up when I am moving."
  • LULULEMON - Shake It Out High-Rise Running Short: Ali said that she hasn't tried them yet, BUT people love them because their loose and have a lining.
  • BEYOND YOGA - Spacedye Keep Pace 5" Short - Ali is a fan of these, but notes that you need to size up.
  • Ksmien Women's Athletic Running Shorts: Client Liana recommended these because they have a high rise and a comfy shorts liner
  • ODODOS Women's Biker Shorts: Liana also recommended these biker shorts and noted that she prefers the 5inch inseam and that they're super comfy. Editor's note (that's me): I also own these biker shorts and love them. The material is thick and not see-through!
  • Gym Shorts From College: Okay, it's not really a recommendation (since we can't all borrow her gym shorts), but I loved this client's answer. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

The Client Picks: Maternity

Don't worry, I didn't forget about maternity and postpartum picks!

  • Old Navy Biker Shorts: Sarah sized up and paired it with a few oversized tees for a perfect combination. She says "I wore them like my uniform during pregnancy and post partpartum. And tbh I still wear them!"
  • Beyond Yoga Biker Shorts: We had one client recommend these AND Sarah also mentioned that she rented these during her pregnancy and they worked out great.
  • Kindred Bravely Joggers: A client recommend these as her top pick!
  • AMPOSH Women's Maternity Biker Shorts: Ali said that "the over-belly shelf is soo comfortable!"
  • H&M Activewear: Dominkia recommend H&M for their great maternity options!
  • Vuori Sweatpants: One client recommended these and while they mentioned that they only wore them at home, I (the editor), think they would be a great option for a FIT4MOM class.
  • Poshdiva Leggings: I wore these during my last two months of pregnancy and well into postpartum. They were so comfortable and fit really well!

How to Choose Between These Options

Remember, not every recommendation might be the right option for you. Here's a quick checklist to go through when you're looking for a new pair of shorts:

  • Workout type

Do the pants or shorts work with my workout?

  • Body stage

You may like different things when you're pregnant or postpartum than you would normally and that's okay. It's the most important to wear what works for you.

  • Budget

How much are you okay with spending? Do you only need one pair or multiple pairs?

Let me know what shorts and pants you end up getting and if your favorite isn't on the list, share that as well!
