We asked FIT4MOM DC clients and instructors for their honest sports bra picks. Here's what's actually holding up through stroller workouts, HIIT, barre, and beyond.
The Best Sports Bras for Moms (From Moms Who Actually Worked Out in Them)
Dana Weinstein, SG Style
Finding a sports bra that actually works through every stage of mom life is harder than it sounds. Heck, I went through different sports bra eras before I even got pregnant!
When I got pregnant, I realized that my body was quickly changing and none of my old sports bras fit. I also needed significantly more support from my sports bras. My solution was to just buy the most inexpensive and high support bras. I wore whatever those were and then promptly forgot about them when I gave birth.
Like me, after you gave birth, you probably forgot sports bras existed until your doctor cleared you to work out and you were getting ready for your first FIT4MOM DC class as a postpartum mom. You realize that your old sports bras don’t fit and/or you can’t easily nurse in them.
We spend so much time thinking about finding bras for our pregnant and postpartum bodies, that we completely forget about sports bras. Then there are too many choices and reviews that are all over the place.
Since I’m sure many of you have also found yourself in a similar position, I wanted to put together a post sharing the favorite sports bras of FIT4MOM DC teachers and clients. This isn't a generic list I found online. These are real recommendations from the moms who wore them.
Quick note: Before we get started, I wanted to make sure you know that this post for moms in all phases of mom-ing. Whether you have a 12 day old baby, a 12 year old child, or a 21 year old adult, there’s a sports bra on this list for you.
What to Look for in a Sports Bra as a Mom
The good news is that when you're looking for a sports bra, the first thing you need to consider is always the same.
First, what is your level of fitness? You want to make sure that your support level matches your workout. Are you doing a HIIT class or run club? You want to look into higher levels of support. Are you joining me for a stroller barre class? Medium support will be great!
Next, we want a comfortable bra that you can easily put on and take off. Whether you're squeezing in a quick workout or this is your alone time, you don't want to spend ten minutes trying to put on or take off your sports bra.
Finally, if you're nursing, you want a sports bra that's nursing friendly! You never know when you may have to pause during a workout to nurse (which we fully encourage in FIT4MOM), so you want a sports bra that accommodates that.
Our Top Picks (Recommended by FIT4MOM DC Clients and Instructors)
Here are the favorites (in no particular order).
ThirdLove Kinetic Sports Bra
Niki loves this sports bra for so many reasons! It has sewn in pads (like many bras should), a wide range of sizes, and it's very supportive. It also has one feature that you don't see in many sports bras: you can adjust the straps in the back so they can cross each other or lay straight.
GapFit Sports Bras (Medium Support)
Fun fact, Gap and Old Navy have really good activewear sections. So it's no surprise that GapFit Sports Bras popped up on here. One FIT4MOM DC client said that her favorite are the ones with medium support. A lot of the Gap ones are designed in fun colors and are part of a matching set (but don't worry, you can buy them separately).
Shefit Ultimate Sports Bras
I love learning about new companies, so I was excited when instructor Olivia shared the SHEFIT Ultimate Sports Bra. Besides it's "overall amazingness," Olivia loves them because they're adjustable and have non-stretch support.
Lululemon Energy Bra
I honestly don't know if it's possible to talk about activewear without mentioning Lululemon. This one was recommended by one of our clients and I have to admit, I love the criss-cross straps in the back!
Target All In Motion Racerback Sports Bra
Of course I had to share my own pick! I love how supported and comfortable I feel in the All In Motion Racerback Sports Bra. It's also easy to get on and off, which is definitely a win.
Nursing Friendly
You never know when you may need to pause mid-workout to nurse or pump! Here are some great nursing-friendly options.
Old Navy Maternity Medium Support Nursing Sports Bra
I told you, don't sleep on Old Navy Activewear! This sports Bra is supportive, sweat wicking, and of course, nursing friendly.
SHEFIT Flex Sport Bra
Olivia is really doing all of us a service by introducing us to SHEFIT. While they don't have a sports bra specifically labeled for nursing, the Flex Sports Bra is perfect for it. This sports bra has medium support, adjustable bands, and it zips down the front.
Momcozy Low Impact Sports Bra
Momcozy made an appearance on our favorite nursing and postpartum bras post, so I'm not surprised to see it appear on here too. Our FIT4MOM DC client loves it because it "has good support and it’s easy to breastfeed in!"
Kindred Bravely Sublime Hands Free Pumping Bra
I don't think that we're allowed to talk about nursing bras without mentioning the Kindred Bravely Sublime Hands Free Pumping Bra. This bra has lighter support for working out, but it's stretchy and great for nursing or pumping.
Kindred Bravely Sublime Nursing Sports Bra
Melissa gave this sports bra a 10/10 for comfort, but mentioned that it can be difficult to pump in because it's not hands free. (FYI, this one is low impact, but they have a high impact version too.)
Honorable Mentions
Instructor Niki really did some heavy lifting for all of us when it came to testing sports bras that were good for nursing. While she said that she didn't find any super great for impact, her favorites were "Sweat & Milk Venice nursing sports bra (for high impact) and Senita Athletics Go with the Flow Nursing Sports Bra for medium or lower impact."
Another honorable mention goes to H&M (who has an excellent maternity section, btw) for their triangle bras. This would be a more low impact bra and Isabella said that it was "soft and easily movable to the side" for nursing.
How to Know When It's Time for a New Sports Bra
We're all going to need to replace our sports bras at some point, so let's go over some of those signs:
- Are the bands of your sports bra are stretched out? If the straps over your shoulders or the band under your breasts are loose, your sports bra has reached the end of it's life. If you have a sports bra with adjustable bands, then this will take a little longer to happen and you have some wiggle room to tighten them.
- Is the level of support is wrong for your activity? If you used to do yoga and you've switched to HIIT workouts, you need a sports bra with more support. If you aren't sure what level of support you need, you can't go wrong with a high support sports bra.
- Does the smell never leaves, despite the number of washes? Look, everyone gets stinky when they're working out, there's no shame in that. But if you've washed your sports bra and it's still smelly, it's time for it to go. (Please note, I'm assuming there is nothing wrong with your washing machine and you didn't forget to add the soap. Not that I'm speaking from experience about that last one, cough cough.)
- Does it feel like it may not fit? Bodies change, there's no shame in this. If you find that you're popping out of your sports bra or the bra leaves red marks on you, it's too tight. If you feel it shifting around and not staying in place, it's likely too big (and/or stretched out).
In terms of replacing your sports bra, there isn't a magic number of how many times you can wear it before it needs replacing. If you're working out more frequently, they will most likely need to replaced more frequently. If you aren't sure if you should replace them, go through the bullet points above. If you find yourself answering "yes" to the questions, it probably needs to be replaced.
