The Best Clothing Rental Companies in 2026: A Stylist’s Honest Comparison
Note: Today’s post about Best Clothing Rental Companies contains affiliate links.
Your friendly FIT4MOM DC instructor and personal stylist is back again and today we're talking about clothing rental companies! Clothing rental companies have been around for a while and you've probably debated trying them at one point. But if you're like me, you were probably been overwhelmed with the number of options. There are SO MANY clothing rental companies with different styles, prices ranges, and offers.
So how can you decide between nuuly vs. Rent the Runway vs. Armoire (and that's only the tip of the iceberg)? Well, I put my personal stylist hat on and did all of the work for you. I'm going to go through every clothing rental company I found and breakdown all the information you need, from pricing to reviews to offers. (PS If you like this post and want me to do a post about jewelry and bag rental companies, leave a comment and let me know!)
What Are Clothing Rental Companies (and Are They Worth It?)
Before we fully dive in, let's chat about what clothing rental companies are and how they work. I know that there are a few of you scratching your head right now.
Clothing rental companies are companies that charge you a monthly membership fee and in exchange they let you "borrow" a certain number of clothing pieces per month. Each month you pick the items you want to wear, they send you the clothing, you wear it for a month, and then you ship it back. That process repeats until you stop the service.
While a clothing rental is not for everyone, there are many reasons that you, a FIT4MOM DC Client, may be interested in them. First, they're a great option if you're pregnant and you don't want to buy clothes that will only work for a few months (or weeks). Another reason? You're postpartum and trying to figure out your new mom style as your body is changing. Do you have a lot of weddings this summer? Use a service so you don't have to buy a bunch of new dresses. Or finally, maybe you're just a busy mom who doesn't have time to shop or you don't want to.
The Pro's and Con's of Using a Clothing Rental Service
There are a lot of pros to using these services. First, you have access to a wide variety of clothing, but you only have to look in one place. Second, if you don't like something, it goes back at the end of the month. You're never going to be stuck with clothing you don't want or doesn't fit you anymore. Third, the cost per wear of your clothing will go way down. You aren't going to have to worry about wearing that $100 dress enough times. Finally, it's more sustainable than constantly shopping.
However, there are also cons to any service (some of which I'll also touch on when discussing the individual companies). First is the fit consistency. Most of these sites feature multiple brands, but we all know that a size 6 at one company may fit completely different at another. Honestly, I've even seen it happen within a single brand. So there's always a chance that you're going to get items in your box that don't fit properly, which can be really frustrating.
Let's also address the other major elephant in the room: hygiene. I mean, you're wearing clothes that someone else wore before you. You can't not think about it. The good news is that most of these companies thoroughly wash each item before it's sent to a new customer. They'll also retire pieces that are clearly at the end of their life. Additionally, if something slips through inspection and you get an item that's stained, most companies will be pretty generous with bonuses, refunds, or exchanges - you just have to ask!. These companies would not still be in business if they were constantly sending out smelly or stained clothing.
How I Evaluated These Clothing Rental Companies
For each company discussed below, I reviewed the following:
- Pricing (Many of these brands offer discounts on your first month, but I only shared the non-discounted price.)
- Membership structure
- Fit and size inclusivity
- Maternity options
- Purchasing options
- Ease of use
Best Clothing Rental Companies (2026 Comparison)
Nuuly
The Quick Review
Nuuly is owned by Urban Outfitters (which also owns Anthropologie and Free People), so the majority of options come from brands in those stores. While you can find work options in there, it's best for casual clothing or for dressy occasions.
Pricing Structure
Nuuly has the most straightforward membership of any company. There is only one option and that's $98/month (plus tax) for one shipment per month. In each shipment, you can rent six items and add up to four items for $22/item.
Sizing
Nuuly offers petite, standard, and plus sizing. However, when I selected plus size, the site went from showing 23, 533 available items to 3,984. When I tried the same thing for petite, it showed 2,856 items. You don't need to be a mathematician to know that both of those are pretty small percentages.
Maternity Section
This is where I got slightly annoyed. They made it difficult to find all of the maternity clothing in one place (here's a direct link so you don't have to hunt for it like I did). Once I got to it though, I was pleasantly surprised. They carry a number of popular maternity brands and non-maternity brands that have maternity clothing. Some of the maternity brands include Hatch, Ingrid + Isabel, Nom, Ripe, and Seraphine. The only downside is if you need clothes for the office, this is not your best option. The clothing seems to primarily be either casual or occasion (like a wedding guest) pieces.
Ease of use
Other than my frustration with finding the maternity section, the site is pretty easy to use. It's easy to look at the clothing and you can mark items that you're interested in for the future.
In terms of renting, they provide you with a bag and return label, so when you're done, you just put everything back in the bag, slap a label on, and drop it off at a UPS or Urban Outfitters. They keep it easy and shipping and returns are free.
Purchasing
If you liked the items you rented, so much that you want to permanently keep them, you do have the option to buy them at discounted price (from what you would find in a store). However, all purchases are final sale.
Stylist's Take
Because Nuuly is one of the services that I used in the past, I do feel like I should share it specifically because I didn't have the best experience. However, my reasons were pretty personal and specific. I only wanted to get petite items and it felt like the things I wanted were never in stock in my size. Second, it felt like I couldn't get the sizing right for me on the items I did get. I ended up only using the service for maybe a month or two. That said, I know people who use and love it. So if you want to try it out, I would still encourage you to!
Rent the Runway
The Quick Review
Rent the Runway (RTR) has been around for a while. When they first started, they primarily offered one time rentals typically for more dressy occasions. They now offer a subscription service that allows members to try high end designer clothing at low prices. They also offer everything from casual wear to work wear to weddings, so you can really find whatever you need.
Pricing Structure
RTR has three different membership tiers. The lowest level is $129/month and gives you one shipment per month, with five items. The middle level is $164/month and gives you two shipments per month, each with five items. The highest level is $275/month and gives you four shipments per month, each with five items. You can also adjust your plan at any point.
RTR also still offers one time rentals (no memberships needed) for four or eight day periods. The items will vary in price, but you can get a free back up size. This is a great option if you need just one dress for a wedding or gala.
Sizing
When I browsed their in-stock items, they only offered sizes 0-22. I was actually pretty disappointed by the exclusion specialty sizes.
Maternity Section
While I was disappointed by their lack of extended sizing, I was very impressed with their maternity collection. They have a dedicated maternity section, that includes Hatch, Nom, Seraphine, and Pietro Brunelli. They also have baby-bump friendly clothing suggestions, so don't have to limit yourself to maternity clothing.
Ease of Use
Shipping and returns are part of your membership, so you never have to worry about that. For returns, they give you a bag to drop off at UPS or a home pickup (in certain zip codes). You can also order your new bag before returning your old one (you have 24 hours once the new one is ordered). So you can really minimize the days between shipments.
RTR also has an app if you would prefer to use that instead of a web browser.
Purchasing
You can purchase items from your membership order. All you have to do is go to the site or app and click "buy now" on the style in your current shipment. However, all purchases of items from your monthly shipment is final sale.
RTR also offers the option to purchase "pre-love" styles. These can be returned for a refund (minus shipping and restocking fees) within 7 days of delivery.
You can not purchase items from a one time rental, but you can go on the site later to purchase the item (if it's available.
If you're having issues with items fitting during your first 60 days of membership, then you can get free items in your next shipment.
Stylist's Take
If you're looking for a one-stop-shop, Rent the Runway is a great option. They cover all different styles and I was very impressed with their maternity section. The only downside is that if you only wear specialty sizing (petite, tall, etc.), you won't find it here.
Armoire
The Quick Review
Armoire focuses on designer brands that are great for work or work events. They do have great casual and pieces for dress events dressy events, but the primary focus is work. Some of the brands they have include Paige, Lilly Pulitzer, Milly, Boden, Hutch, Eliza J, and M.M. LaFleur.
Pricing Structure
Armoire offers three pricing tiers. At the lowest level it's $89/month and gives you one shipment per month, with four items. The middle level is $129/month and gives you one shipment per month, with seven items. The highest level is $249/month and gives you unlimited shipments per month, with six items per shipment.
Note: If you want, you could exchange one item at a time. You don't have to send back your entire box to get new pieces (which is really useful for maternity items). You can also keep the pieces as long as you want (as long as your subscription is current). That means you could keep one dress for nine months, but continue to get new items each month.
Sizing
They offer sizes 0R - 24W. They don't offer petite sizes, but state that they have been able to successfully dress petite women with their size range. I was having some issues with the site (which I touch on below), so it was a little harder to see how many total items were available.
Maternity Section
Armoire has dedicated maternity section with almost 800 pieces. They focus primarily on maternity brands, like Soon, Seraphine, Ripe, Nom, but they also have non-maternity brands that have maternity items. I was also very impressed with the business casual clothing they offered in this section
Ease of use
Amoire offers free shipping both ways and you can order your new shipment as soon as you tell Amoire you shipped it (you don't need to wait until they received it). They also have an app you can use.
Purchasing
You can purchase your items by easily clicking the "buy" button in your account. However, all purchases are final and discounts could change.
Stylist's Take
There are two things that Amoire does that I absolutely love (that I haven't mentioned yet). First is that they offer the option to work with stylists (at no additional cost) to figure out the pieces that are right for you. They also make it a priority to highlight rising women-and POC-owned brands.
FashionPass
The Quick Review
FashionPass leans more towards the trendier brands (think Anthroplogie's cool little sister). They cover casual, work, and dressy clothing and have a great selection. However, if what you're looking for is maternity wear, I would try another company.
Pricing Structure
FashionPass only has one membership tier: For $125/month you receive two shipments per month, with five items per shipment. You can add a third shipment for an additional $49.99 if you want another box before your next shipment unlocks..
Sizing
FashionPass offers sizes XXS through 4XL. There is a petites section, but when I looked at the "available now" items there were about 17 items, three of which were scarves. Out of curiosity, I checked out the "available now" options for 4XL and I was impressed with how many options there are.
Maternity Section
They have a dedicated maternity section, but I was, unfortunately, not impressed. The clothing in this section is primarily "bump friendly" clothing and I didn't actually see any specifically maternity pieces until page four. Their site also only has one dedicated maternity brand (Bumpsuit).
Ease of Use
It was fairly easy to navigate the site and sort through the available items. Their ordering process is fairly straightforward and you can start your second order as soon as FedEx scans your order. That being said, only having FedEx as your available option isn't super convenient for most people.
Members also have the option to send rentals back separately, but the items they keep can only be returned in the next bag.
Purchasing
You can purchase items directly from the site and they don't have to be items from your current rental (which is a requirement for most companies). You can however purchase items from your rental at the discounted membership price.
You can return pieces that you've purchased, but if it's a piece you purchased from from your rental, you'll get charged a fee of $19.95. If the purchase is separate from your rental, you can return it for store credit only. Also, if you aren't a member, you'll be charged $9.95 for shipping.
Stylist's Take
I've seen a number of good reviews for FashionPass, but I also saw a number of complaints about their customer service. I have to also admit, it feels a little weird that this brand has been around for ten years and I had never heard of it until now (despite style blogging for more than ten years and hearing about ALL of the other rental services).
BNTO
The Quick Review
Like FashionPass, BNTO leans more trendy, but think higher end and more international. Their service also includes bags and jewelry as part of your rental options. However If you're looking for a company with great maternity options for while you're pregnant, this isn't it.
Pricing Structure
BNTO offers only one membership tier. For $98/month you get one shipment per month, with six items. You also receive a bonus credits of $20 per month to buy pieces from their site.
Also, a heads up, you can't use a debit card or prepaid card to pay for your membership. They only accept credit cards.
Sizing
The sizing ranges from XS to 3XL. When I filtered for size 3XL, there were also a lot of options, which was great.
Maternity Section
There was no maternity section.
Ease of Use
The site was incredibly easy to explore and their rental program is straight forward. They also have an app that you can use.
Purchasing
You are able to purchase the items that you have rented as long as it's in your current box. As a member, you'll receive up to 75% off of items, but they don't show you the prices head of time because they use dynamic pricing (aka the price changes based on the demand). Also, all purchased items are final sale.
What I really liked about BNTO is that every month that you're an active member, you get $20 in box credits, plus you can get $0.50 in credits for every review you leave. Even better, is that your credits roll over. The items do have a higher price point though, so it would take a while before you could get an item completely for free.
Stylist's Take
BNTO calls themselves an AI-powered fashion rental service, but it felt like it was only AI-powered in pricing the clothing you could purchase.
Like FashionPass, I had never heard of this service before, but I feel like it's because it's the fashion girls' secret. While looking through the site, I felt like I was a cool fashion girl who was "in the know."
Which Clothing Rental Company Is Right for You?
Now that you've heard about all of them, how do you choose? Let's break down what each is best for:
- If you’re a busy mom: Rent the Runway or Armoire
- If you work in an office: Armoire
- If you need more casual clothing: Nuuly
- If you need event outfits: Rent the Runway
- If you're pregnant: Rent the Runway
- If you want to try new-to-you brands: BNTO
When Clothing Rental Doesn’t Make Sense
While clothing rentals are fun, they aren't for everyone. Here are a few examples of why clothing rental may not be for you:
- You prefer to repeat the same pieces and/or outfits: I absolutely love this and it's great for busy people who need to know that everything works.
- You live in athleisure: most of these brands don't focus on activewear, so there wouldn't be much for you
- You're more into basics than variety: rental services are for people who like to change out pieces in their wardrobe. But if you're someone who prefers to find one perfect white tee, one perfect pair of jeans, etc., you don't need a rental service
- You struggle with inconsistent styling: As I mentioned with my review of Nuuly, when I tried it out, the sizing was so inconsistent (for me) using a rental service was more frustrating than helpful
Stylist Tips for Making Clothing Rental Worth It
If you've decided that you want to try out one of these services, let's talk about how you can make the most of your subscription:
- Order strategically: when you're putting together your box, look at your calendar. Are you traveling that month? Do you have a work event? Do you need to dress up? Pick the pieces that will work best with your schedule
- Use it to experiment with new styles: want to try out barrel jeans but you don't want to commit to them? Throw a pair in your next box!
- Make sure pieces work with your existing wardrobe: You don't want to get a bright orange jacket only to realize nothing in your closet works with that color. For each piece you get, make sure you have three different ways you can wear it with the items you own.
- Track cost per wear: If you're spending $150/month for five pieces and you only wear each piece once, your cost per wear is $30. That's not worth it. You want to get the most out of your membership, so pick pieces you can wear multiple times during that month
Final Verdict: Are Clothing Rental Companies Worth It in 2026?
So after all of this, is it worth it to use a clothing rental company? Yes, but with some conditions. You want to make sure that you use the company with the clothes best for your lifestyle. Also, you want to make sure that you're actually using the service. If you realize that you're still doing a lot of shopping, it might not be the best option.
That being said, when used intentionally, clothing rental companies can be a great tool and help you get through the busy seasons in your life (like pregnancy).
